What Your Morning Symptoms May Be Telling You About Your Night

Do you wake up feeling stiff, congested, groggy, exhausted, or in pain?

For many people, how they feel first thing in the morning becomes the measure of whether a treatment is working.

If they wake up feeling better, the treatment must be helping. If they wake up feeling the same—or worse—they wonder whether the treatment is effective at all.

I know it's hard to tell whether something worked when most of our symptoms appear in the morning. But how we feel when we wake up may also tell us something about what happens—or doesn't happen—while we're asleep.

In this article, I want to explore what our morning symptoms may be telling us about our nighttime processes, the different Esogetic brainwave programs available to support those processes, and why I use both Esogetic Medicine and RestoreChi. I'll also touch on something I've found particularly interesting in working with these two approaches: the difference between healing that brings something into our conscious awareness, allowing us to make changes in how we live, and healing that seems to happen without our having to consciously work through it. Much like being awake and asleep, neither approach is wrong. We need both, in balance, if we want lasting health.

What Happens During the Night Matters

In Esogetic Medicine, sleep isn't simply a period when we stop being active.

It's an important time for the body's cleansing, regeneration, and processing of experiences.

During the day, we're generally occupied with responding to the world around us. At night, different rhythms become available to support processing and restoration.

When those nighttime processes aren't functioning as they should, we may wake up feeling the effects.

Morning stiffness, congestion, pain, or grogginess can therefore be worth exploring not only as symptoms to relieve, but as possible clues about what happened overnight.

I've developed a new rule of thumb for myself when I wake up in pain, especially when it's something relatively minor, like tightness in my shoulders or what feels like puffiness on the bottoms of my feet that hurts when I walk.

I've noticed that if I jump straight into work, that discomfort can turn into a headache.

So I make it a priority to lie down and run the Esogetic Sleep 2 brainwave program.

If head pressure has already set in, I might choose the Gamma 40 program instead. Within Esogetic Medicine, it's intended to support glymphatic cleansing processes and work with limbic- and amygdala-related stress patterns.

Gamma Short is a 10-minute alternative for someone who doesn't have 20 minutes to spare. Personally, I've always seen the value in investing the full 20 minutes in Gamma 40, which was developed based on the work shared in Donna Jackson Nakazawa's Childhood Disrupted.

Different Programs for Different Needs

One of the things I appreciate about Esogetic Medicine is that there isn't just one brainwave program for sleep, stress, or recovery.

The programs have different intentions, depending on what a person is experiencing.

Why dreams and childhood experiences matter in this approach

Sleep 2 is intended to help the body move appropriately through theta and delta brainwave rhythms, supporting the nighttime processes that Esogetic Medicine associates with cleansing, rejuvenation, and processing experiences through dreams.

The Dream program has a different intention: working with subconscious material that may not be readily accessible, including when someone doesn't remember dreaming.

There are many reasons people may avoid facing conflicts. Some of those patterns can be connected to childhood experiences and what we believed we needed to do to remain supported and safe.

That's why there are programs such as Child 1 and Child 2, which address conflicts associated with different developmental periods. Some people don't enjoy these programs initially because of the old conflicts or feelings they may bring to their awareness.

Other programs focus on stress in adult life, including Cerebral A, which is intended to help us let go of old beliefs and conditioning that no longer serve us.

Sleep 1, for example, is intended to quiet the analytical mind so we can fall asleep. Stress Basic is its daytime counterpart, intended to address hypervigilance before it becomes physical tension. The idea is that what we can process during the day doesn't have to follow us into the night.

And while I'm naturally a morning person, my husband and son aren't. The Awakening program is one I would consider for the difficulty they experience getting going in the morning.

The important distinction is that difficulty falling asleep, waking during the night, or waking up feeling unwell aren't necessarily the same experience. They call for different approaches.

Waking with symptoms doesn't automatically mean the treatment we tried for that symptom failed. It may mean we also need to look at what happens during sleep that could be contributing to the symptom returning.

When the Liver Has Too Much to Process

Esogetic Medicine isn't the only approach I use to understand what may be happening during sleep.

Master Yan, founder of RestoreChi, describes nighttime waking between 1 and 3 a.m. as the liver not being able to handle everything that needs to be cleansed as blood descends from the brain. When this happens, it can leave the person feeling uncomfortable enough to wake up. Rather than viewing waking as only a problem of sleep itself, he interprets it as a sign that the body may need help with its cleansing processes.

Master Yan also describes why an older version of his specialty speakers may have contributed to difficulty sleeping. In his framework, the body's energetic doors may be closed, preventing the healing energy from entering where it's needed. So he's now built an organ-opening process into his specialty speakers, with the intention of allowing the treatment to reach where it's needed. You no longer have to try to sleep with someone constantly banging on your doors.

Esogetic Medicine does something similar. We apply brainwaves in a pattern intended to tell the body, "This is your brain talking. Let this information into every cell of the body." We then follow this with a correcting impulse using coloured light. Within Esogetic Medicine, this makes the treatment far more physically effective than using coloured light alone.

Why I Use Both Esogetic Medicine and RestoreChi

I often forget how much RestoreChi is helping me because, when Esogetic Medicine helps, the shift is often conscious. When RestoreChi helps, sometimes what was there is simply gone.

It's interesting to me that two non-verbal approaches can have such different effects. Conscious understanding is often necessary for us to change how we're living our lives.

No amount of telling someone, "You should do ABCD," after RestoreChi has done what it can is necessarily going to make them change. Not until they're ready, perhaps because they've grown tired of what happens when they don't. And that can take years.

RestoreChi removes what we don't need, so we can use Esogetic Medicine to focus on what's left, with less urgency.

Conscious vs. Nonconscious Healing

Let me give you an example of what I mean.

In my last article, What if you've been trying so hard to help someone that you've overlooked what they actually need?, I shared a treatment I applied on my daughter and the profound impact it had on me—including going home to clean for my husband, recognizing my role in his and our dog’s health, and teasing out which part of my child’s early life was my mistake versus what was tied to her IVF conception.

Contrast that with a typical response to the RestoreChi specialty speakers: fatigue, lower stamina, diarrhea, temporary joint, head, or meridian congestion/pain, and low-level morning anxiety.

Always check in with us so we can help determine whether your response needs more attention or whether you can simply keep doing what you're doing.

To me, RestoreChi feels like surgery under general anesthesia: you wake up sore, but generally untraumatized. Esogetics, on the other hand, can feel like surgery while awake—a wild, insightful ride if your nervous system can handle it, but potentially traumatizing if it can't.

I’ve actually had the same surgery twice, the first time under general anesthesia, the second while awake. If I had to choose how to do it again, I would go for general anesthesia. But I didn't learn anything from being asleep, it was too easy, I didn't change my life—which is why I ended up needing surgery again. The awake surgery was horrible; I even dealt with a lasting infection afterward because I was carrying so much self-loathing at the time I didn't think I deserved to get it checked, but this experience forced me to transform my life.

My hope is that people can use tools like RestoreChi to build their physical container first, so that when they are ready for Esogetics, it feels like an empowering, life-changing transformative rollercoaster ride that they can handle rather than an overwhelming shock that they can't.

The ride is worth it. My daughter's treatment didn't just impact me. After school, one of her friends called her, they made up, and her friend came over.

While my daughter was still a bit rude to me, she was later able to explain that she was tired, disappointed that she and I hadn't had any one-on-one time together, and was adjusting to the hormonal changes that come with her body getting ready to start menstruating.

Not bad for an 11-year-old, and the journey continues.

We never arrive. We just keep peeling off the next layer until we have learned as much as we can.

For example, my son's upcoming psychoeducational assessment has prompted me to look into getting something on paper for my daughter now, too, so her transition to high school might go more smoothly (and cost less) than his.

It's not easy to have these interactions with the school, but they're starting to see and take action on what we've suspected and tried to draw attention to all along. I think this is finally going to start working out well for us.

Whether we're working with physical symptoms or the patterns that shape how we live, having the right tools available when we need them can make a difference.

Why Having Your Own Brainwave Machine Can Make a Difference

One of the reasons I wrote this article is to bring awareness to the value of having access to this device at home, so you can reach for it when you need it and choose programs intended to address what your body may be asking for, rather than focusing only on relieving symptoms.

Restorative sleep is more important than most people realize. When we aren't getting the quality of sleep we need, it can affect how we feel physically, emotionally, and mentally throughout the day. For me, the value of these programs is having another way to support that process.

I may need help when I wake up, but sometimes I also need support during the day or when it's time to fall asleep. We each have different patterns, and recognizing them can help us choose the programs intended to meet our needs. It's all about finding our center again, because in Esogetic terms all illness starts with dysregulated brain rhythms, too much stress, not enough rest, and improper sleep.

It's not about "getting your money's worth." It's about having the tool on hand when you need it, especially if it offers another way to address something you've been relying on other treatments to manage.

I know that investing in a brainwave machine isn't something everyone is ready for or able to do. But I want people to know the option exists and understand why I find having these tools available at home so useful.

For people who may be interested in having their own device, sessions with me can help you learn what programs would be most helpful for you.

My experience of using these programs has been healing and life-changing.
