I know better. And still, after giving in to one ice cream and two crazy breads, I'm awake before 3am with my right arm still in pain, my vision blurring as my arm heals (better when I go outside than when I sit too long at my computer/screens), and my liver doing exactly what the TCM clock says it would be doing at this hour — trying to clean up.
This article is about what happens when we self-sabotage, what the body does in response, and what the TCM clock teaches us about our unique patterns — if we are willing to learn the art of reading them.
The TCM organ clock — a brief orientation
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Qi moves through the body's organ systems in a 24-hour cycle, spending two hours in each organ at peak activity. The clock is a diagnostic tool — when you consistently wake at the same hour, feel pain at the same time of day, or even notice symptoms clearing on schedule, the clock tells you which organ is struggling or doing the work.

The hours most relevant to this article:
1–3am, liver time — the body detoxifying, making fresh blood, processing the day. Waking during this time can indicate too much yang energy, liver overload, or unresolved anger, frustration, and resentment.
3–5am, lung time — the body replenishing with oxygen, the immune system active. Waking during this time is associated with grief and sadness. The body should be kept warm at this time to support the lungs.
3–5pm, bladder time — the body clearing reserves and processing fear. The bladder is paired with the kidney — water element — and governs the body's ability to release what it has been holding. If headaches or tension clear in the afternoon, the bladder meridian is doing its job.
A note on timing — waking after 3am is better than waking between 11pm and 3am. If you are waking between 11pm and 1am (gallbladder time) or 1–3am (liver time), the liver is congested and struggling to complete its work. Waking after 3am means you have made it through liver time — the lungs are now active and letting go, which is a natural clearing process. The body is doing what it is supposed to do. The 5–7am large intestine time that follows is ideally when the body is ready to release what it processed overnight — warm water in the morning supports this, and caffeine disrupts it.
This article is the result of waking before 3am, my next article is a result of waking after 3am, see: What Does Alahnnaa Campbell Mean When She Says Autism, ADHD, and Mental Health Can Get Better?
Why the liver insults the lung — Wood insulting Metal
In TCM's Five Element theory, Metal (Lung) normally controls Wood (Liver), keeping its rising energy in check. But when Liver Fire or Liver Qi stagnation becomes excessive, this relationship reverses — the Liver attacks the Lung instead. Liver Fire invading the Lungs is part of the "insulting" cycle — where the weaker element rebels against the one that should control it.
This happens because the Liver meridian pathway ascends through the body and passes directly through the Lung region. When Liver Qi stagnates — most often due to emotional stress, anger, or repressed frustration — it can transform into Heat, then intensify into Fire. That Fire rises along the Liver channel and attacks the Lung, disrupting its descending function. The Lung is considered a delicate organ in TCM — it cannot tolerate Heat or rebellion well. When invaded by Liver Fire it loses its ability to descend Qi, leading to cough, breathlessness, and chest tightness.
This is why the Liver and Lung follow each other in the clock. The Liver governs the smooth flow of Qi and is responsible for ascending and dispersing energy during rest. The Lung governs Qi and is responsible for descending and diffusing it as the body prepares to awaken. After the Liver completes its processing — emotions, detoxification, regulating Qi in the early morning hours — the Lung takes over to distribute Qi and defensive Wei Qi. Disruptions in this transition, such as waking at 1–3am due to Liver imbalance, can lead directly to coughing or breathing difficulties at 3–5am.
This pattern is not symbolic. It reflects a functional relationship where emotional stress, dietary imbalances, or chronic stagnation create real physiological symptoms. The ice cream and crazy bread are not random. Late eating, cold and damp food, dairy, and alcohol are exactly what drives Liver Qi stagnation — and that stagnation becomes the Lung's problem two hours later (or worse, throughout the day).
What self-sabotage via diet actually does
Ice cream and crazy bread may not be as big of a problem for everyone, but for me, I know that dairy and alcohol make my perimenopause symptoms worse — especially my sinuses. I've been doing very well, genuinely getting better, but I still slip from time to time, because I want to feel normal.
The pattern is the problem — working instead of winding down, eating cold and damp food, giving the liver more to process than it can handle without waking me up.
Symptoms of liver imbalance include digestive upset, migraine headache, breast tenderness, blurred vision, and tendonitis — all of which I have from time to time.
This is just what happens when the liver cannot complete its work — and when the lung inherits the overflow; grief, sadness, fatigue, and reduced immune function follow.
My vision worsens when my liver is overloaded. This is not a permanent condition — it is information. Vision problems are reversible if we start listening to our limits. The liver opens to the eyes in both TCM and Esogetic Medicine. When liver Qi stagnates, vision suffers. When the liver is supported and the stagnation clears, vision improves. I have seen this in myself. The blurring is not damage — it is the body telling me I have exceeded what it can process cleanly, and that the energy being given to heal my arm is being borrowed to manage what I chose to eat (or work on) instead.
It is also worth noting that with the new RestoreChi Specialty Tracks, it is common for the stomach to seem unable to process food. But it is not the stomach that is weak — it is the food that is too yin and needs charging with the RestoreChi water card before ingestion. The body is rightfully rejecting it. I am borrowing from tomorrow to pay for tonight.
This is why settling mental health and willingness to self-care is important before we attempt physical healing (and why my hands may have disappeared in my kirlian photo below, signaling mental health needs some support). As we heal physically, we are asked to level up in our self-care to protect what has been restored. We need to be grounded in our bodies to receive that message.
Shoulder and elbow healing while vision worsens — what is actually happening
The outer elbow is associated with the gallbladder in Esogetic Medicine. The gallbladder and liver are paired organs — wood element, working together. When the liver is overloaded, the gallbladder shares that burden. The energy being given to heal the arm is not available for the eyes. This is not a sign that treatment is failing. It is a sign that the healing is real and the body has priorities — and that extra energy given by the tracks is not for work. It is for healing.
Vision problems are just information. They are the liver's signal, not a sentence. They are reversible when we change what we are asking the liver to do.
When I have headaches, if I am lucky they will clear by 3–5pm — bladder time. Headache finding its exit through the bladder meridian in the afternoon is the body working as it should. The 3am waking is also the body working as it should. It is just telling me I gave it more than it could process.
What the TCM clock teaches about unique patterns
Since I was up, with my arm in pain, I decided to track where this pain terminated in each of my fingers.
My left little finger had pain in the bottom medial point when I made a fist — which represents liver/gallbladder impact on the heart in Esogetic Medicine. While my right index finger hurt on the top and lateral side — which maps to the spine, the axis of the soul, carrying a burden (see image below).
This is what we see in a kirlian photo:

After applying this treatment I felt more hormonal, hot, groggy, frustrated, less motivated. One might say these are bad things, but if we remember Straight from the Horse's Mouth — Clients Need to Accept Their Reactions we know that there may be a reason that it is important for me to feel this, things may not be as rose-coloured as I want them to be, the theory may have kinks that still need working out.
The morning after treatment (when the after photo was taken) the pain when I made a fist with my right hand had moved more to the middle finger, with a possible diagonal axis (see images below). Collectively representing: emotional processing in the now, the limbic brain and the foot zone. I had been feeling pain in the sole of my foot for the past few days and I was certainly struggling with emotional/motivation. Several of the right fingers (including the middle) show the classic ring around the radiating lines (see after image above) which means part of me wants to go out, and part of me wants to stay in. Treating the coordination system of the brain can help resolve this. I also woke in the night a couple times needing to pee, which is also a kidney/bladder/uterus, cold, fear issue (as well as detox). The middle finger diagonal axis says:
...destruction of inner and outer values, can go into the bone, relax the spine, treat the fear zones and bone lines, need help seeing properly so it doesn't have to go into the structure of the body, fears/kidney/bladder holds them back. As mentioned above, like this diagonal pain axis in my right middle finger suggests, I do feel the pain more in the front of my shoulder now than I do in the back.
Collectively, this means that testing fingers and feet for pain sensitivity does not always give the same information as a kirlian photo. But information we receive from either is something we can use to understand and identify treatment that might help.
If we go back to the connection between 3am waking and 3pm headache clearing, this is kind of like my natal astrology chart, that has the bulk of my planets on the setting side (3pm) and my self-sabotage planets on the rising side. When someone has the majority of their planets on the setting side, they can't go out and make their life happen, they have to respond to what happens to them in life.
If I look through a Human Design lens, I am a 1/3 profile, which means that my mind investigates but my body learns through trial and error. And beneath that, I am a Priest-Preacher, which means I will keep saying the same things, and I will be able to influence those closest to me, and all my opportunities will come via those connections. I applied the coordination 10 treatment, which is good for when you have double stress rings (indicating that you’re extremely burnt out and need a vacation) in blue (which is for insomnia, tension, and pain), the physical rhombus of flow (to stimulate lymph drainage, especially from the chest), and the anterior fear zones. This treatment caused me to realize something. If I am here to influence those closest to me, one of the inner/outer values that I may be violating is offering what I do to friends who don't recognize its value — and then telling myself I don't like to charge friends, as a way to keep learning without accountability. That doesn't serve either of us. See: What kind of mother, what kind of service provider?
After treatment the pain at the front of my shoulder is significantly reduced, and I don’t have as much pain in my fingertips when I make a fist with my right hand any more, just a bit in my upper forearm, going towards, but no longer reaching the middle finger, and my right armpit lymph is no longer sore.
Some things can be cleared with RestoreChi alone, other things require a change in perception, that Esogetic Medicine can facilitate. The latter is more true for adults, who have been conditioned to believe things that do not serve their life plan. Kids are often more connected to what is right for them, and thus may only need RestoreChi.
This is an example of integrating Unique Psychology, Unique Health, and Felt Safety. Learning the art of what your body is trying to communicate to you, so you stop hurting and start supporting yourself. It may seem overwhelming at first, but like any language, bit by bit it becomes second nature — if you keep at it.
